| | Selenium has shown it's greatest effect for people with low levels in their blood. All of the studies of vitamin E have been done with smokers, but it has shown some effect as far as prostate cancer is concerned. Dr. Moyad said that PC Spes is an herbal product that shows a high estrogenic effect. At normal dosage it cost $350.00 and upper month. You can get DES, an artificial estrogen, for about $20.00 per month and get the same results and the side effects will be the same. When asked where you can get DES he named the Professional Art Pharmacy in Baltimore, MD.
The final speaker of the morning was Saki Santorelli, Ed.D. Saki is Head of Stress Reduction Clinic, University of Massachusetts. The title of his talk was: Heal Thy Self. Mr. Santorelli said that we have alternative/complimentary and medical treatments for our cancer, but what can I do for myself? What is myself? We should consider self as a verb not as a noun. We are not limited to who we think we are. We need to be aware and to be mindful We should stop, not just pause but stop, to see ourselves more clearly. We need to connect to ourselves. We have enormous resources. We just need to connect to them. These resources have never been tapped.
Mr. Santorelli read a couple of poems to illustrate his points. I am not sure which one but one of the mornings speakers said in answer to a question about the stress level caused by the events of 11 September that it was as if the whole country had been diagnosed with cancer at the same time. For lunch we were served a nice salad, sliced turkey breast, rice, steamed green beans, tea or coffee followed by a raspberry ice in a chocolate cup.
The first speaker of the afternoon was Dr. Fred Lee who titled his talk "The Iceman Cometh” - Cryosurgery. Dr. Lee started off by telling us that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1984, a Gleason grade 3 + 5 with metastasis to the lymph nodes. He started his slide presentation off with pictures of his family and told us a little about each. He is very proud of his children. Dr. Lee told us that PSA and TRUS have about the same sensitivity and specificity. The DRE is less sensitive. He explained that intracellular ice kills the cell and ice will also kill the blood supply. He showed us a picture of the ice forming probe and explained that it will form an ice ball 1” wide and 2” long.
